Stylist Spotlight: Meghan

Meg as we like to call her has been working as a stylist at Fuss for 4 years. She came to us as a junior stylist who was eager to learn and always thriving to sharpen her skills. After working with us and honing her craft for a good amount of time, Meghan could no longer resist London calling and set off for a new adventure to the UK. After working as a stylist in a boutique salon across the pond, Meg returned to Fuss much to our delight. Past clients were happy to reunite with her as she has always had a warm smile to greet everyone. Still with us years later, Meg is styling up a storm everyday on the floor. Continuing to strive to learn and be the best she can. She loves to see people leave the salon feeling great and excited about the work she has done for them. Hearing different stories and the diversity of the people she has in her chair keeps her loving her overall work. She has a passion for everything, whether its peek-a-boo highlights with a sharp pixie cut or a killer up style; she is on it. Meghan never leaves home without a can of hairspray in her purse!

We were happy and thrilled to host our good friends at The Brauhaus for a special night of hand-crafted brews this past Saturday! Nibbles were provided by The Mugshot Tavern and local artist Rebecca Fazio designed the unique glassware. The night was a success and we look forward to more events with our friends at The Brauhaus..

Q+A with Kristin and Stacey of Fuss Hair Studio

1. What is the story behind the concept of Fuss? Why did you guys decide to open up a salon?

We deceided to open the salon because we really didn’t want to work for anyone else anymore! LOL. Seriously, Stacey and I both spent a good amount of time in the Leslieville area and we saw there was a vacancy in the neighbourhood in terms of salons. About the concept of fuss, I was talking to my mom one day about hair, because my mom is a stylist as well, and we were talking about how fussy hair can be. At the same time I was also trying to think of the company name and FUSS stuck! Stacey and I really wanted our salon to look fashionable, stylish and hip without any of the attitude that usuaully comes along with it because we were so welcoming and friendly. People usually tell us that!

2. What are some things you love about Leslieville?

The best thing about Leslieville is the diversity of the people who live here. Young families, couples, gays, retirees and people who have lived here for years and years, before it was cool. We feel like we own a shop in a small neighbourhood. People walk by and wave on a regular basis, stop in the streets and chat and gather at the local watering hole. The best thing about this though, is that its actually just a great neighbourhood in an amazing metropolis!

3. What makes your clients special to you?

It’s a relationship. We always talk to about the relationship between a stylist and client. We get very up close and personal to a perfect stranger right off the bat. You know right away if it will work or not. It’s like building a friendship. It’s funny we always talk about how our clients really do reflect each one of us, they match our personalities to some degree. Most of our clients are also from the ‘hood. They love to support local. Its really a great feeling.

4. What are you favourite services at the salon?

I love , love cutting. especially short women’s cut or mens’ cuts. Right now, I’m totally into pixie cuts and mens’ old fashioned barber cuts. Stacey loves doing colour. Any kind but a lot of fun stuff.

5. Where do you guys envision Fuss being in 5 years?

A very polished boutique salon. With great clients and the most amazing team of stylists we can offer. A superiorly solid salon in Toronto.

6. How has Fuss changed since the opening?

We are more aware of what we need to do to offer the clients the absolute best experience we can. We were always in tune with it but we have just been working at perfecting it since we opened about 5 years ago. A year ago, we opened up a second floor of Fuss Studio so we are able to offer more space and design for clients.

7. Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Absolutely everywhere we look!

8. If you could style/cut/dye any celebrity’s hair who would it be? What would you do and why?

David Beckham. I love his hair. I love his style and fashion sense. I would love to be responsible for his overall look. Stacey would love to do some colour on Kelly Osbourne, she always seems open to fun different colours. I think she would look great in an emerald green hair colour. Different shades of greens are hot right now!

Caring for Coloured Hair

  • Take care of the ends. The healthier your hair, the longer the colour will last, so make sure you take a trip to the salon every six weeks for a regular trim.
  • Use sun cream. It’s not just your skin that needs protection from the sun; if you want your new colour to last longer and keep its shine, you should keep your hair covered up in the sunshine or use a protective cream. Water-based products are better for dyed hair than oil-based.
  • Use a conditioning treatment. Coloured hair tends to be drier than usual, so you need to use a deep conditioning treatment as part of your hair care routine at least once a week. Apply to hair that has been dampened with warm water, and wrap in a towel for half an hour to give it time to be absorbed. Then shampoo out the excess and you should find your hair shine restored.
  • More water on the inside… The state of your hair is an indication of your general state of health. Make sure you drink plenty of water and fruit juices, and keep hydrated; your whole body will appreciate it, and you’ll find the effect reflected in your hair and skin. And if your hair is better hydrated, the colour will last longer
  • .
…and on the outside. You can rehydrate your hair, itself, too, using moisturising products that help the colour penetrate the whole length, from root to tip, and keep that salon-fresh shine.
  • Limit the changes. Each time you change your hair colour, more chemicals are needed to achieve the desired effect, and more chemicals means more damage to your hair. So, if you want to ring the changes, try to do it gradually: your hair will thank you.
  • Rinse well. Salt and chlorine can dry and damage hair, so don’t forget to rinse off – or shampoo – after swimming, whether you’re at the seaside or the pool.
  • Hands off. You may be proud of your new ‘do, but try not to keep touching it. As well as making it dirty with your hands, you could be damaging the cuticle - the outermost part of the shaft - or unconsciously harming your scalp.
  • Go easy with the dryer. Don’t automatically reach for the dryer every time you wash your hair. Using dryers, curling tongs, straighteners, etc. makes hair more porous – and porous hair doesn’t hold the colour so well - so let it dry naturally when you can.
  • Get the right shampoo. Finally, choose a shampoo designed for coloured hair and for your scalp type. A gentle shampoo will allow you to wash your hair every day and show off the shine of clean and healthy hair, whatever colour it is. Ask your Fuss stylists for some recommendations!

The New Pixie

I’m sure you have seen it on all the red carpets. Short hair is definitely trending and we are loving Anne Hathaway’s take on it. She had her actual long locks cut right on screen while filming for Les Miserables. What surprising is that she decided to keep the style and rock it! It has been one of the most requested hair styles this year!

Don’t be afraid of the pixie. It’s a hairstyle that can tailored to suit many face shapes. It’s versatile enough to look sweet or edgy.

Our tips for wearing a pixie:

  • For a edgy look, sleek hair down. Use a shining pomade so hair lays smooth and not dull.
  • For a casual look, tousle hair with mousse and blow dry while raking hair with your fingers. Try scrunching the longer layers in the front to create texture.

Your face now becomes the main feature so be brave with your make-up too. Play up your features with bold lips or some smokey eyes.

Are you ready to chop off your locks? Visit us at Fuss to chat with a hairstylist!

How To: Highlights for the New Year

We all know what looks best and natural when it comes to hair colour is strategic highlights. However, remember you hair has movement and can look different when styled differently. When doing highlights remember to ask for subtle tones that suits you skin colouring. You don’t want something drastically different than your natural colour - perhaps one or do shades lighter in the same warm or cool tones.

With the holidays creeping in - we are guessing you’re going to be doing some simple up-dos to attend some formal gatherings and parties. Keep in mind that your highlights placed at the “top” layer of your hair will be swept up and basically disappear. That’s why many women dislike their hair worn up! It just looks plain and lacks texture. Ask for highlights that are close to your face’s hairline (just above the ear). Unless you’re Daphne Guiness, ask to keep these highlights a little more sublte and subdued than you regular ones. We’re all about funky trends and odd colours too but if you’re aiming for the “Oh, this? It’s my natural hair colour!” keep our advice in mind! Always ask a Fuss stylist!

FUSS(less) Holiday Updo!

Going to a swanky affair for the holidays? Look stylish in an updo hairstyle. Let’s be honest, a holiday updo can be hard to pull off if you don’t know the right way to style your hair. Hairstyles for the holidays should look sleek but also fun and creative.

TWISTED BUN

Section and clip hair into 3 sections (right side, left and back).

Pull back section into a low ponytail, secure with an elastic and tease ponytail with a fine tooth comb.

Begin taking pieces from the teased ponytail and twist/loop until tight.

Secure with pin and continue until the entire ponytail is twisted and pinned.

Next remove clips from right and left side. Pull and twist one side away from face and pin into bun. Repeat with remaining side and finish with hairspray.

DEEP SIDE PART WITH FISHTAIL BUN

Create a deep side part using a comb.

Gather hair loosely behind each ear and begin creating a fishtail braid using the two joined sections of hair, taking alternating pieces from underneath each side and crisscrossing over each other.

Continue until entire braid is created and secure with a small elastic.

Take fishtail brad from end and roll under until you reach nape of neck. Secure with a few pins and lightly spray with hairspray.

FRENCH BRAID BALLET KNOT

Gather hair from corner of eyebrows and secure with a clip.

Flip head upside down and begin French braiding hair from nape of neck up. When you get to the crow secure with an elastic.

Take clipped section and join with braided section to form one ponytail.

Gently twist and begin wrapping around elastic, securing along the way with hair pins.

Finish with a mist of hairspray!
